The Artistic Objectives: Deconstruction Microgravity was to serve as an environmental contributing factor in the development of my drift paintings. Similar experiments were conducted by Yves Klein, who would sometimes place his paintings outside during rainstorms to allow the environment to influence their compositional development [21]. Another objective of my painting process was to deconstruct the canvas as a support system for paint. Eliminating this underlying structure mirrors, for me, developments within mathematics and physicsmathematicians and physicists constantly question the theoretical foundations upon which their disciplinary narratives have been constructed. It was my intention as well to increase the point of view from which a painting may be viewed, from a finite 180° semicircle to an infinite number of global viewpoints. My painting experience in microgravity gave me fascinating ideas for a future theater where audience and performer would drift symbiotically within a weightless 360°globe. |
